Even in well run organisations, the "default autopilot mode" can be to respond to circumstances as they occur. That is because "as humans" our innate ability to manage day to day issues is how we adapt to the complexity of the real world.
The downside of being good at dealing with crises when they arise is a tendency to move from issue to issue without resolving underlying weaknesses so the same issues reappear over time. In this environment fixers and overtime heroes become the role models for future aspiring leaders to follow.
Our research indicates that around 60% of organisations exist in this "fragile" state where issues resurface, are accepted as inevitable and become invisible but it doesn't have to be like that if organisations encourage conversations amongst functional leaders about:
- The pressure for change (why bother)
- The vision for change (What does good look like)
- The capability for change (Where are the gaps, what do we need to work on)
- Actionable first steps (What can we do today to make a start)
When dealing with future uncertainty, the use of data is a part of this process but not the complete picture.
Conversations about what could be, with those who work alongside us, is an essential part of weeding out weak ideas and getting the buy in to build a momentum for change.
By working through the above four steps, Leadership teams transition from the default autopilot reactive mode into a proactive improvement driven outlook.
Leader Learning Clubs
Leader Learning Clubs provide leaders at all levels with awareness of improvement best practices to support discussions about their relevance, development of plans to apply new ideas to confirm/refine the implementation process. This provides a practical foundation for applying lessons learned to other areas.
This works best when the topics discussed are linked into a company improvement road map such as that set out by the TPM improvement road map which consists of the following topics:
- Reliability Improvement
- Ratcheting up performance
- Deliver Better Project Results
- Embracing Advanced Technology
- Early Equipment Management
